Recently, I have seen a jump in BIPOC folks in outdoor-marketing campaigns, which is awesome, but I feel the larger-bodied community is still not represented. I don’t see fat folks in ads or promotions or even on information signs or literature at parks. Just the same ol’ thin, able-bodied folks. It’s unfortunate because fat people go outdoors too.

The more you visit outdoor spaces, the more confident and knowledgeable you become. It may be scary at first, but the beauty you’ll find is totally worth it. If you’re nervous, reach out to someone you trust and ask them questions, read books or magazines about the outdoors, follow outdoorsy people on social media, or join a local outdoor group that will make you feel safe and comfortable.
